Jax's Cafe N.E.

This summer has been so hottt that staying at home has become a luxury. So when I do go out it has to be something special and special it was to go to Jax café in N.E.

Walking into Jax will bring you back in history to the atmosphere of the onetime great supper clubs. The leather banquets, the long bar and then the large dining room with everything just perfect…what can I say except you need to see it to know what I am talking about.

I have always wanted to try the brunch since it has been recommended to me by so many people. The selections look quit appetizing and ready to dig in and that is exactly what I did. It is so hard to make up your mind when so many choices are given to you but my motto is...try a little of everything. My favorite of the day was the lasagna sooo soooo good.

After gorging on the main treats the best was yet to come and that came in the form of desserts….everything from little cheesecake balls to bread pudding with caramel sauce to any type of cake you could imagine.

The next question is...what does one do after enjoying a food frenzy? Well the answer is easy you go home take a little rest and then exercise for the next hour or so. It makes it all worth while.

Jax’s was so good that I went back again yesterday to celebrate a B’day, and it was just as good as the first time. Needless to say I think Jax’s is a must on anybody’s restaurant list but remember if you go for the brunch you might want to fast 2 days prior.

The one thing I forgot and it might sound a bit hooky, but if you make reservations, when you arrive at your table there will be matches with your name engraved...ok stop laughing but I thought it was so cute.

Fogo De Chao

Sunday started Restaurant Week in the mini-apple and I was able to get reservations at Fogo de Chao. Yes I have been there before but made the exception to go back.

I guess that everybody knows that this restaurant is a carnivore’s delight. There is not a cut of beef that they do not bring to the table and each one better then the last. It amazes me that most of the people take their place at the salad bar, and load up on the tasty treats rather than taking advantage of the endless meat selections I overheard the table behind me tell the waiter, no bread, no sides and no salad bar…now that is a true carnivore!

I do have one suggestion for the restaurant and that is…go a little easy on the salt. If you get an outside cut of meat the flavor is ruined by the amount of salt they use, be smart and go for inside cuts. The wait staff is more than eager to oblige.

One last comment the cheesecake is more then delish it is outstanding

Pazzaluna

Katy Perry might not have been in St. Paul on Saturday night, but I was! The people that were going to the concert with me decided to take the road trip and go to Pazzaluna. We arrived just in time to take advantage of the last minutes of the Happy Hour. The drinks were good and I learned my lesson not to mix rum and vodka…not pretty. Going with a group of people is great, and since everybody orders something different you get to taste all the dishes (without double dipping of course). I must say that I was not overly taken with the food. The spicy penne was anything but spicy and the seafood linguine was tasteless…a little disappointing. If I were to go back I would get there earlier and take full advantage of the Happy Hour. Looking at the hh menu there are several good choices, from both the food and drink menu. The night turned out to be lots of fun and we still have the concert to look forward too.

In my opinion this restaurant deserves a 3 out of 5 star rating ***.
Service was friendly and good.
Noise level low making it easy to hold a conversation.

Tryg's

Over the weekend it was Gay Pride, so after a parade one does work up a little appetite. The downtown restaurants, or at least the ones that were open, were very crowded. Many suggestions were passed back and forth and finally the decision was made to go to Tryg’s.

I have been to Tryg’s several times and the only time I thought it was good was when it first opened. In my opinion it has gone progressively downhill from there. One can overlook the fact that there was only one waitress to take care of the bar but she also had to take care of the outside sitting area….way too much to ask of one person. I will say that the waitress was terrific and seems that she had for the most part all under control.

We started the meal with bloody marys, which I swear were virgin since there was no alcohol in either, but could be due to the fact that it was happy hour prices. I ordered another, at which time I showed the waitress my Groupon, I was told that the drinks would be regular price...My response…that’s fine, but please make sure that the bartender uses alcohol in this one, since I am paying regular price… My bloody arrived and it was perfect!

The food, not sure where to begin…there was not really too much on the menu to pick from, but we managed. The order consisted of 2 burgers and onion rings, what could be simpler. Well let me tell you, the onion rings were burnt, the French fries were dripping of oil and the burger was mediocre.

I guess by this time you can figure out my opinion on this restaurant. As much as I wanted to think that thru the years and with a new chef it might have come up in the world, but sadly to say it has not.

Crave...Downtown

What a way to start June but getting get together with friends and a visit to the new Crave downtown. It might seem like Crave is taking over the world, or a small part of it, but I think they might have out done themselves with the renovations of the old Palamino.

My friends are working and this is their lunch hour so there is no alcohol to be had. In away the lack of an alcoholic beverage does make a difference when you have to pay the bill; nothing against drinking…just saying.

The menu, as would be expected reads like a bible, covering everything from specials to sushi to pasta and salads etc…etc. You would think that 4 women would have diversified appetites, but no…its salads for all.

I tried the Crave tossed turkey cobb…so delish…nothing left on the plate not even a piece of green. From the looks at the other plates on the table, it might be said that my friends had the same delightful experience and it was Yum all around.

Since it is lunch and everybody is on a time schedule, our delightful lunch had to end. I will go back,but I will wait till the patio opens, which should be within the next week according to our waitress.

When you are downtown and need an idea for a little respite to just kick back in a relaxing atmosphere…try Crave!

Psycho Suzie's

I think Summer has arrived in the Mini-Apple!!!! So run don’t walk to the nearest outdoor patio, preferably by a body of water, serving great cocktails and good food. The place that comes to mind is Psycho Suzie’s and their new outdoor patio. This place has an aura all its own and I am not sure that I could find the words to describe. There is not just one bar there are several, each one with its own atmosphere.

Myself and fellow foodie head straight to the great outdoors to get a seat on the patio, to soak up some rays and enjoy the evening ahead. We start with a couple of vodka tonics, the perfect way to start an evening, then sit back for some good conversation and people watching. It’s time to eat, everything on the menu sounds good but we rely on the Suzie burger and the low rider of course with tater tots.

It must be my lucky day; I can almost see dessert on the horizon. Yep…I see a S’mores platter headed my way…I am a happy camper. S’mores will bring almost everybody back to childhood, holding your marshmallow over open heat, and then to squeeze onto a graham cracker only to be covered with chocolate or better yet a reeses peanut butter up…..oh my I think I died and went to heaven.

I cannot recommend this place enough…the atmosphere is eclectic and just a good way to spend a warm summers night. I think you get the gist by now…just go and see for yourself.

Aura

I have a Groupon that is ready to expire and I also need to get together with a good friend, so why not combine the two. Our destination is Aura in Calhoun Square, a place that I have passed many times and because it was so dimly lit, just kept on walking.

I arrived exactly at 4 and yes the place was empty, but that never stopped me from having a cocktail and waiting. I decided to have a Mojito (not part of the hh); price is good and the taste not bad. My friend arrived and shortly she had a glass of wine in hand and the chatter begins.

We opted for appetizers picking them from the hh menu. For starters we did the waffle fries with sour cream dressing along with the baked brie and apples. The brie and apples was a little bit deceiving…it was thin slices of apple with a minute sliver of brie…disappointing. We order another batch of drinks and decide to share the three cheese pizza. The pizza had good flavor but could have been cooked a tad longer.

By this time after a good number of drinks it is time to leave. It is about 8 and the place is standing room only. I know this is not because of Groupon, but the prices are just too good to pass up and the food is not bad.

If you are in need of a place to go for hh in uptown you might want to consider Aura.

Purple Sandpiper

It’s time to use another Groupon which will take me to Purple Sandpiper. I was off to a bad start when I got lost just going around the block. I would figure if an address states Lyndale Avenue that it would be on Lyndale not in a strip mall…another subject all together. With a little direction from the restaurant I did arrive.

By this time I needed a little refreshment of the alcoholic type. My waitress was very knowledgeable about the wine list and suggested a Berringer Merlot as opposed to a Minnesota wine. She had a great suggestion! My guest arrived just in time to have one of the bottled beers, for the life of me cannot remember the name. With the beverages we decided to share the usual calamari and yes the sauce was quite spicy but good.

On to the main courses…since I wanted a salad I choose the grilled salmon with mixed greens. I must be turning over a new leaf (lol) ordering a completely organic first course and thinking how delish it was. My guest ordered the roasted cauliflower mac & cheese with lots of hot sauce on the side. As far as I could tell both dishes met and or exceeded expectation.

Oh, my favorite course is about to arrive…we ordered the classic tiramisu…to share of course. It was good but I think that it could have used a bit more espresso flavor or maybe a dash of Kahlua.

By the time we were ready to leave the place had a very nice crowd even though the weather was not that good. The prices are not bad and there is plenty to choose from, it makes for a very nice neighborhood restaurant with flair.
Must go to prepare for my 6 mile walk and I know there will be a little nosh after that….can’t wait.

Catch Up Time

It’s time to play catch-up!

After a Royal Wedding and a movie where does one go, that’s easy..PF Changs. I like Changs for their apps and some tasty cocktails. The Pear Mojito is perfect for a warm summer’s day. Of course one cannot pass on the lettuce wraps, wontons and calamari. I would say this is a perfect way to end a perfect day!

Mothers Day is here and I need a place to catch a quick bit…nothing heavy but delish! When I am put on the spot it is hard to think of something so quickly but I did come up with a winner. How about D’Amico what a perfect choice! The turkey and avocado sandwich was delish,the chicken focaccio was mouth watering. D’Amico is a gem in so many ways, it is not only sandwiches but the pizza and pasta looked so good I might have to make another trip.

To go to the other end of the spectrum I did pay a visit to Seven. The disappointing fact is that I was not very hungry, but I also knew I had to try something. I started with the Lemon Pucker, which I was told was much like a Lemon Drop…not even close…way too sweet. I did try the Pear Martini which was a winner. For dinner I sampled the Steakhouse Cobb…just perfect and tasty too. My friend had the Seafood pasta which not only looked good but smelled fantastic. What can I say if there is a special occasion this is the place to go, but here is a little reminder make sure you have plenty of money, it is expensive. Seven was the perfect way to start a night that continued on to see Jersey Boys.

There is one more place that I almost forgot Spasso in Minnetonka. Finally a place that offers not only Brunch but also Lunch…this makes me a very happy camper. I had the Spasso burger which was done to perfection. PHM had the Black & Blue cobb salad. With plates cleaned and appetites sated, onwards to Target for an afternoon of shopping.

Brits Pub .....The Royal Wedding

It’s the day of the Royal Wedding, so that must mean celebration. Ok where does one go to not only watch, but also partake in the British celebration? The answer has to be Brits pub.

Up in the morning at 2 to be at Brits around 4, myself and my friend want to beat the crowds and also get a good seat. We arrive about 4:10, the crowd has gathered, we get inside the front door, scramble for seating, and now wait. The buffet starts at 4:30, I cannot imagine eating breakfast at 4:30 but the smells are so tantalizing I am sure a morsel or two will pass my lips.

Finally the line begins and the masses are ready. Kudos to Brits for covering everything that makes up a British breakfast, including scrambled eggs, Irish bacon, bangers (sausage), beans and tomato sauce and finally the blood pudding. Since I was first on line, everything looked delish and so nice and hot.

I love to people watch and believe me when I say; it was the best place to do just that. Some people wore wedding gowns, some wore their pajamas, and I cannot describe the rest. The added attraction was watching all the different types of hats that were worn; everything from the most outlandish to the very best is show. Needless to say watching the wedding was the major priority, the rest was a plus.

Well the wedding is over, the celebration at Brits is winding down, but what does one do at 7 in the morning. After such a great breakfast a walk is definitely in order, and downtown is just the place to do it. The skyways are the ideal place to not only walk, but a little window shopping can be done and also keeping in the tradition of people watching.
I think it is time to rest and where better to do so but the movies. My day has officially ended.

Sopranos Italian Kitchen

I don’t usually go back to a restaurant over and over, but in the case of Sopranos the exception has been made. I myself have been there for happy hour mostly but my friends wanted to do a sampling. So in addition to the happy hour food we tried a main course plus a dessert. For the happy hour it was the meatball sliders, Italian cheese curds, piadina(their version of flatbread)and calamari.

We all shared the Lobster Gnocchi which was absolutely fantastic. From the expression on the faces of the people that tried it, it was unanimous…Terrif. I ordered a dessert, which is not on the web menu but let me describe it for you. It was small pieces of light cake made with Lemoncello, about 5 pieces to a plate. Each of the little pieces was on a bed of lemon custard and each piece separated by a shaving of white chocolate. Ok, let me define the taste a little bit more…it was an orgasmic explosion of flavor. I would go back just for the dessert.

What can I say, as much as I would like to find something wrong or make a snide remark, I just can’t. The more I go to Sopranos the better I like it. This could become one of my favorite restaurants!

The topper of the evening was going to see Scream 4…let me just say there is no amount of alcohol that could erase it from my memory, and believe me I have tried. Go to the restaurant but miss the movie catch it on Netflix’s.

The Lowbrow

Sunday afternoon and I feel a pang of hunger. My fellow foodie PHM makes the suggestion...let's go to the Lowbrow...OK...fine with me. I am always game to try a new restaurant.

The neighborhood is very interesting. The Lowbrow is extremely interesting! What to eat was a bit of a challenge since I do not do organic or healthy. Our waiter who was extremely helpful, made my decision easy...the burgers are terrific. Since he introduced himself as a carnivore, I decided to take his suggestion and have the BBQ bacon burger. OMG it was d’lish.

My fellow foodie decided to go the healthy route and ordered the veggie burger. He used the BBQ sauce from my burger instead of ketchup. The BBQ sauce received thumbs up.

I must admit that I walked into the Lowbrow ready not to like anything about it. My opinion changed and would certainly consider going back again. The atmosphere is very comfortable and the prices are great,for anybody that is budget conscious.

I do have one suggestion…Please put a napkin holder on the table. One napkin per person just does not cut it.

Crossroads Deli

Have you ever had a yen for a corned beef or pastrami sandwich, just like the ones they make in Katz’s deli, on the lower eastside of New York? Well I went in search of just that type of sandwich only to find that the Mini-apple is not home to the proverbial Jewish deli.

I did find a place that is very close to what I was looking for and that is Crossroads delicatessen. I tried their corned beef sandwich, which was piled high and succulently delish. Oi vey, it was more than any one person could eat so home it went to be inhaled later in the evening. My friend ordered the matzo ball soup, which again more than enough for any one person. Before I forget the pickles were so good they almost brought a tear to my eye.

Anybody that is a transplantee from New York or has ever visited knows what a good corned beef sandwich is. I will go out on a limb and say that Crossroads is as close as you are going to get to a New York style deli...

Urban Eatery

I am wanting lunch on a Sunday afternoon…not brunch but straight up lunch. You know salads, burgers and sandwiches. The place of the day is Urban Eatery, a new restaurant from the Crave Group. Do you go with great expectations or just go and see what happens?

I guess I did have some sort of expectation knowing how good Crave and Sopranos are. I really was not asking for much. Myself and fellow foodie were only looking for a good salad or a burger…not a big request. I decided to have the Chef salad and PHM decided on the grilled salmon Caesar. I will admit my salad was excellent more than I can say for the Caesar. The only thing making it a Caesar was the croutons and bottled Caesar dressing…other than that it was mixed greens with salmon.

I ordered a Bloody Mary and was given the choice to make it myself or have the bartender make it…being the Princess that I am; I had the bartender make it. I did ask the waitress if there was any difference i.e. mixture or price…the answer came back NO. When the bill arrived there was a difference, but when it was brought to the attention of the waitress, it was immediately corrected.

There is something missing in this restaurant. I am not sure if the owners just left it and went on to open Sopranos, but it neither has the piazzaz of Crave or the panache of Sopranos.

I do wish them well but they still have some work to do. I hope it will get better by summer since the location is ideal for an outdoor happy hour.

Sopranos Italian Kitchen

It’s the start of a new month, so that can only mean new restaurants to explore. It’s Saturday morning,I call PHM, gently plant the seed…how about trying a new restaurant? what did you have in mind? Well, how about Sopranos it opened last week in the West End…with a little bit more discussion, arrangements were made to meet for a late lunch.

The best part of going on Saturday is the long happy hour, 11 to 6. We started with the Italian Margarita. They were so darn good!!! The drinks were followed by meatball sliders, an order of calamari, the porchetta sliders and lastly an order of the Trenne pasta. Whoa, that sounds like a lot of food…but it was all shared. All was good but the best were the meatball sliders and the Trenne pasta..so so good.
The wait staff are extremely nice and helpful in guiding you thru their menu.

I went back again just to see if the happy hour (3 to 6) would be an enticement to bring in more people, but sadly it did not. I can only hope that with all the restaurants that have opened and that are scheduled to open that the Sopranos will be a success.

Time to go, off to the gym to work off all the above!!!!

Anonymous!!!!

I just realized that somebody by the name of Anonymous, remarked that I only go restaurants,where I can either use a coupon or there is a deal being offered. It is also intimated that just because I use a coupon or looking for a special, I cannot have a good experience…Oh how short sighted!

I am a subscriber to Groupon, Living Social and CBS local, as are many other people in this day and age. With the economy in the state that it is, I am sure that I am not the only person that use these items. I am sure that everybody is looking and would like to get a bargain, even Anonymous. The issue of cheap eats was written about in the Mpls/St. Paul Magazine this month by Andrew Zimmern.”It seems that cheap eats and restaurant recommendations in big cities are always at the forefront of everyone’s mind.”

Well Anonymous, if you have the money and go to as many restaurants that I do, my hat is off to you. But if you like to go to restaurants, your missing out on a good deal. Please remember I am not looking for a FANCY experience but more to enjoy the people I am with…the rest is either there or it is not!

Don’t get me wrong I do respect other opinions good or bad, but when they are off base I must vent.

How lucky can I get, two great restaurants in one weekend. My next stop was on to Nye’s for dinner. I had a Groupon that was about to expire and this is a restaurant that I have wanted to visit for a while.

The place has been around for about 50 years and their image has remained stellar. The menu offers everything from pasta to steak to seafood…what a variety. I decided to have the broiled walleye which was quite the treat. My fellow foodie had the chicken and wild mushroom with kluski pasta, it must have been good since there was nothing left on the plate.

Now I am not much of a drinker...…LOL. I tried the Cosmo...OMG was that lick smacking good, so good that I had to have another. In my opinion not too many places make a good Cosmo, but my hat is off to the bartender...just keep them coming.

From the time we arrived till we left about 2 hours later, it was standing room only. My suggestion, if you decide to go, make reservations. I would also suggest that you make time to look for parking or take a handful of quarters, the meters are in effect till 10 P.M.

Fogo De Chao

I am not really sure how to describe or if there is a description for Fogo De Chao, suffice to say it is a gastronomic orgy.

From the minute I sat down the experience started. My friends decided to try the salad bar, which I politely declined. I wanted to make sure that I had the stamina to enjoy all the tasty offering that would be coming my way. As for the beef selections, each one was better than the last. I did not care for the sausage or the chicken. It is amazing to watch the gauchos coming to your table over and over with goodies for you to try. If by chance you need a rest,or a walk in between the feasting, just turn your card to the red side and when or if you are ready to resume turn your card to the green side.

If by chance you still have room for dessert, and I would highly recommend that you do, please try the black and white cake. There were 3 people at the table fighting over the last bit of this heavenly delicacy, it was so d'lish.

It is sinful to think that when all was said and done, that 3 people consumed almost a side of beef...shear gluttony, but the type that will put a smile on your face. After this feasting I would prescribe a nice long walk!

The service is extremely good and the waiters very polite. Everybody is there to please the customer, a rarity in today’s day and age.

I could go on and on but let me plant the seed…you need to go. Words cannot do justice to the dining experience that you will have

One little suggestion, you might want to fast for at least a day before you go.

Sunsets Wayzata

It’s St. Patrick’s Day what does one do to celebrate. All the Irish pubs are going to be standing room only…oy vey...that’s not for me. Ok what about a restaurant that will offer Irish cuisine, that’s a definite maybe. So I start calling around to see if there is a place in the area that will provide this tasty little morsel. OK one problem solved but I need somebody to go with…call a friend…Yippee they would like to go.

Road trip out to Wayzata to Sunsets, I know it is not really Irish, but it serves corn beef. What a wonderful place and the area is great.

By the time we arrived they were sold out of the traditional Irish meal so we decided on the Ruben. The sandwich was d’lish. The one tradition that I was still able to maintain was coffee with a shot of Jamison..what could be better.

I must admit this was a great way to celebrate!!!!

Just a little addendum…the menu at Sunsets is huge. I believe that there is something to please everybody’s palate. What could be nicer than sitting by the window looking out on Lake Minnetonka!

Nick & Eddie

Some people say it’s all about the company, some say it is all about the food…but when you have both it makes for a terrific evening. Went to Nick and Eddie yesterday afternoon to catch up with an old friend.

From reading other reviews I understand that the restaurant had fallen on some hard times last year, but from what I saw yesterday, it is back. Where do I begin, the atmosphere is perfect to sit and have a conversation and cocktail. The Lemon Drops were divine, just the right amount of tartness. And yes I had to follow that with a burger that was done to perfection. My friend tried one of the half portions of pasta,the fettucine, it was a sufficient size for one person. The prices are more than good, you will certainly not break the bank for an afternoon outing.

Nick and Eddie is certainly on my list as a go to in the downtown area. I am sure in the summer when the tables are outside it would be a great place to stop for a drink or 2.

Loring Kitchen

Yesterday, I decided to go back to a restaurant that I was not too happy with the first time, but thought it might have improved. Before I name names let me ask you, what can go wrong with breakfast/lunch?

Myself and a friend went to the Loring Kitchen. The restaurant was not that crowded so you would think they would be on top of their game. We ordered breakfast about 1:25, which consisted of eggs and a burger…how long should that take. At one point I thought they had to kill the cow, it was taking sooo long. When I asked the waiter if our food was coming anytime soon, he responded…burgers take awhile. Did that mean the eggs were done and ready but were waiting for the burger to be finished…not really sure. Finally at about 2 the food was served…and yes the eggs were lukewarm but the burger nice and hot.

It’s sad when you have to keep asking the waiter for the sugar, the cream the ketchup, these are things that should be automatic.

The only kudos I can give this restaurant is the happy hour…they do a nice job.

Not a good experience or a tasty morsel!

Pizzeria Lola

Finding a new neighborhood restaurant is always a thrill. It was suggested to me to try Pizzeria Lola, and I did. What can I say other than I have been to pizza heaven.

I watched this restaurant from conception to fruition, never thinking that it would turn out to be such a success. There are not too many places that I know of where the patrons will start getting on line 15 minutes before opening, but that is Lola’s.

I had the Sweet Italian, Oy… such perfection. The prices range around $15.00, and if you have an appetizer you might be able to share, if you are really hungry you can do a nice job on one pizza. The wine list can get a bit spendy, but you can also get a good glass for $5.00.

I have been to MozzaMia, and in my opinion Lola’s out shines. When it comes to pizza I could, and do eat it cold for breakfast (never said it was the breakfast of champions).

I could go on raving about Lola’s but I would suggest you taking a trip and trying it for yourself. As they say the proof is in the pudding or in this case the pizza!

Friday Night Outting

The best way to spend a Friday night is with a good friend, and a destination of fine food and good drinks.

Myself and PHM, started the night in Nordeast at a little gem called Erte. The happy hour starts at 4 and ends at 7, which is terrific if you work downtown. Great place to either start an evening with a cocktail or to stay and have dinner.

On to Northeast Social, to take advantage of restaurant week. Upon review of the special menu we both opted for the regular menu. The food was d’lish, the service terrif,the wine list outstanding and the prices not bad. I especially loved the decor. The paintings on the wall are from a nearby artist but the decoration over the bar was worth the trip.

Usually by this time we call it an evening, but no, there is still one more place on the agenda. Much to my surprise PHM made the suggestion to go to Psycho Suzi’s…OK I’m game. Oy, try to find parking, the place is mobbed, but not to be dissuaded we did find parking. The place itself is huge and a must go whether you live in the Twin Cities or just a visitor. There are 3 different bars and each one crowded. We were able to find a table not really sure which bar it was in, but who cares the drinks were good. What more can I say other then I will be going back in the summer, it has a large patio on the river…how irresistible.

Well I probably used up my months allowance but it was well worth it.

Parma 8200

Restaurant Week in the Mini-apple is just the best. Being able to go to some of the best restaurants in the twin cities, at a very modest price, for either lunch or dinner, is terrif.

I decided to go to Parma 8200 for dinner and to try the $30.00 menu. When the decision presented itself between the $30.00 menu and the actual dinner menu, the decision was easy, the dinner menu.

I started with the calamari, not bad but not the best. I followed this with the chicken parmigiana which was perfect, but the topper of the evening was the dessert. Let me tell you,the butterscotch panna cotta is to die for. The flavor is beyond anything that I have ever tasted before…it is a most have.

The only downside, and this is my pet peeve…the bartender did not know how to make a Lemon Drop. This was pointed out to the waitress but I just got a shrug of the shoulders. I would not let this dissuade me from going back.

The Bloomington suburbs are very lucky to have a restaurant of this caliber. The prices are downtown prices but if you are willing to share, it does lower the bill.

I would put this eatery in my top 10 to visit again.

This is probably the shortest description of a restaurant that I have ever written. Can’t say that I’m at a lose for words but Parma speaks for itself.

Bad Waitress

No matter how much snow is on the ground, Breakfast is by far the best meal of the day. The only thing better is sharing the time with a friend and trying out a new place.

Went to the Bad Waitress diner (Oy, such a name). The concept is unique…never before did I have to write out my own order, and needless to say I do not read instructions, so it surprised me when everything came out correct.

The menu reads like a bible and everything sounds and looks d’lish. Decisions, decisions one should not have to start a day with so many decisions. I tried the Delmonico Eggs Benedict…can I tell you it was enough for me and whoever else might want to share. But as predictable as I am, there was not much left on the plate for anybody to share when all was said and done. Eric had the Chorizo hash, he said it was good but not enough. I think he is still a growing boy!

The prices were good and the service well that’s hard to say, since the waitresses only serve the meal, but I guess that’s a good thing.

I have one suggestion…for people that are hard of seeing or almost blind (like me) the menu might be a little hard to read, look at the menu online first.

The Bad Waitress is a definite on my list as a good breakfast place and a good value.

I never thought that I would have a weekend with so much to report. Who says you have to live a meager existence on a fixed income?

Forum

Let me start by saying, never have great expectations about anything.

Decided to go big time last night and have dinner at Forum, a place I wanted to go to for awhile but knew I could not afford, but alas thru the good fortune of Open Table specials, it happened.

On entering the place it took me back to the Art Deco period expecting to see maybe Bogart or Bacall at the piano bar. My reverie ended there.

Our waiter was nice but did not volunteer any additional info about specials that the restaurant might be offering. On to the food…the menu is concise and to the point. I went to Forum knowing that I was ordering the Mac-n-Cheese with Lobster and maybe a salad. The wedge salad was very tasty but the Mac was very disappointing. Mac-n-Cheese does not need Truffle oil, it is a dish that stands on its own and gets even better when lobster is added. My partner in food PHM, had the Red Snapper and potato puree, and thought it to be good. Whoever was in the kitchen last night had a heavy hand with salt, it stood out on every dish including the bread.

I have a few suggestions lay off on the salt, add another fish dish to the menu and change the music venue, try something that would go along with the Art Deco interior.

It pains me to say, been there done that will not do it again. Very disappointing!

Hell's Kitchen

Let me start by saying that this might be my true confession or at least the beginning of one. I know that everybody dreams of the day when you no longer have to be up in the morning, and you just have all the time in the world to do nothing…well let me be the first to tell you it is not what it is cracked up to be. It does take time to take on the challenge of a new life…more about my new life in postings to come.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to get together with a former co-worker and go to a place that I have wanted to go for breakfast for a long time, and since I have all the time in the world, it was perfect.

The place I am talking about is Hell’s Kitchen. When I worked downtown it was always on the radar for Happy Hours. I was a bit skittish about a place that I had to go downstairs, but that did not bother me yesterday.

The breakfast menu is at least 3 pages with everything looking quite d’lish. The servers do emphasize that everything on the table from the peanut butter to the ketchup are all home made. I tried the eggs benedict and my friend had the veggie frittata. I’m not sure if I was glad that somebody else was cooking or that it was so damn good that I just wanted to lick my plate. The next time I would like to try the Caramel-pecan roll or the bread pudding with black currents and crème anglaise or maybe even the lemon ricotta hotcake..is your mouth watering yet?

The food sounds good and the prices are not bad…I would say that it is worth a trip and check out the menu for yourself.

Mozza Mia

This is very lazy Sunday afternoon, going from the coach to the refrig and back again. In the back of my mind I'm still thinking of the pizza that I had this week at Mozza Mia. How to describe except to say simply d’lish or yum or fantastic, pick any adjective and it will describe.

I have wanted to visit this new establishment to the 50th and France area since it opened, but with the weather and me being in a budget frame of mind, it took a little time. Let me tell you it was worth the wait.

The menu is very precise with about 4 or 5 items to choose from in each course. When it came to the choice of pizza that was the hard part, since there was a topping on each one that sounded so good. There are about 10 pizzas to choose from. I was with a friend so this was a duel choice but after a couple of minutes and a glass of wine the choice was made, Fig and Prosciutto. It does not sound like something that I would order but I am glad I did. Just let me say that every bite was an orgasmic burst of flavor. The pizza was preceded by the Caprese salad, both of these items are big enough to share. I forgot that they have a full bar, so I tested the wine, not really that exciting.

I am not sure that there is much more to say except, I will be back. I can’t wait to try one of the other pizzas or maybe a pasta dish, I know there will be something to excite my taste buds.

Let me add that since the portions are big enough to share, and the prices not ginormous it makes this neighborhood restaurant a must do. Good idea to make reservations it does get crowded as the night wares on.

Sea Change

My New Years resolution was/is to fix my income, such a new concept, at least for me. I am now open to all the Groupons and anything that will supply me with a cheap coupon or suggestion to a restaurant that I might want to visit.

This new concept took me to Sea Change for their a 3 course meal for $30.00. I read about this in the Star and had to reach for my specs to make sure I read everything correctly, and I did. Now of course the next thing was to find somebody to go with. As luck should have it was the month of January and I am supposed to get together with some former co-workers,could it get any better. My plan is starting to take on a mind of its own. Thursday night we met at Sea Change, needless to say it is always good to see people that you enjoy and for whatever reason do not get to see that much.

The restaurant is beautiful and not noisy, so it is easy to hold and hear the conversation at your table. The menu for $30.00 was more interesting than I expected, that I found no need to look at the main menu. The selection was easy… I started with the pork buns on to the bouillabaisse and then the most delicious dessert that I have had recently,the pumpkin cheesecake. If I could have had all 3 courses of just pumpkin cheesecake, I could die happy. Oh,and yes to have one of their very delicious lemon drops with each course, words could not describe the ecstasy.

It is so sad that this fantastic deal is only going through the end of the month. I have always wanted to eat in the restaurant proper, now I can understand the rave reviews that it gets. I can only hope that maybe this promo was such a success that they might do it again…one can only hope! With or without a promo it is a most do on my list.

Breakfast at Burger Jones…Something New

How great is it to start a snowy Saturday morning at an old stand-by that is now starting to serve breakfast...pretty darn fantastic to me! Yes, Burger Jones is now doing breakfast and a pretty good one at that. The menu is small but covers all the basics and the prices are not bad. The best part is, it is not crowded, I don’t think the word is out yet, but I am here to spread the good news.
So, to try the best meal of the day I descend upon this fine establishment with 2 friends, starving for the treats that lay ahead. Since this excursion was a bit early I had to forgo the Bloody Mary (darn). We all decided to do the Farmers Breakfast which includes eggs any style, sausage and bacon, hash browns and best of all Mrs. Butterworth pancakes (all you can eat). Let me say I was the happy little camper when I heard about the pancakes. As the waiter brought all the dishes the table started to get very crowded but as we helped ourselves room was made and the feasting began.

Funny little side bar almost embarrassing…since the pancakes were all you can eat I took the waiter at his word. I didn’t really care about the rest of the breakfast, not that I didn’t eat it but I am in love with pancakes. I guess I was not the only one, since the plate was cleaned in minutes. So I asked the waiter for another platter. The waiter stood in front of our table, said you would like one…well yes another platter of pancakes…to which he replied…that has never happened before. It is quite funny to see a waiter try to take his foot out of mouth (all in jest). One pancake could really be shared by 2 people but what the heck. Please don’t take this the wrong way the waiter was terrific, attentive,funny and informative.

I will wrap this up by saying it was a good time with good conversation and good food. For a good filling artery clogging breakfast it is a must try,I promise you will not eat for the rest of the day or maybe the weekend for that matter.

Per our waiter there is going to be a new Burger Jones opening soon in Burnsville…not exactly sure where Burnsville is but Burger Jones does.
